First Time Coming to Evanston, Illinois – Did You Know?
YESTERDAY
Before 1830 the land to later be called Evanston was mostly uninhabited wetlands and swampy forest, although the Potawatomi Indians had created high-lying trails along the ridges in a general north-south direction at one time. There exists a point of land protruding into Lake Michigan about 13 miles north of the mouth of the Chicago River that the French explorers named “Grosse Pointe”, referring to the whole area there. Sparsely settled, there were some of taverns or “hotels” along the ridge roads and farming and lumber activity on parts of the higher ground.
TODAY
Evanston a Cook County, Illinois, suburban city located 12 miles north of downtown Chicago with a population of 74,486 in 2010. It is a North Shore community that adjoins Lake Michigan, and is the home of Northwestern University. Evanston is where Tinkertoys were created, and home of the Clayton Mark and Company, which was the biggest employer for many years. From 1858 until 1972, Evanston was a dry community until the City Council voted to let restaurants and hotels serve liquor on their premises. It was only just 1984 before the Council voted to allow retail liquor outlets within the city. Evanston has a reputation for sustainability efforts by government, citizen, and institution alike.
PRIME LOCATION
Evanston is at an elevation of 600 ft. The city’s growth is almost entirely due to its accessibility from Chicago by rail, thus the Northwestern founders did not finalize their commitment to establishing the university there until they knew for sure that the Chicago & Milwaukee Railway line would run there. Evanston experienced rapid growth later on as one of the first streetcar suburbs, and transit continues to make the city attractive today.
QUALITY OF LIFE
Evanston is an important shopping destination for the north suburbs and North Side of Chicago, and was the home of one of the first Marshall Field’s and Sears stores in suburbia. There are numerous commercial centers throughout the city, such as Downtown, Central Street, Dempster Street, Main Street Station, Howard Street and Chicago Avenue. The city is served by the Evanston Hospital, part of NorthShore University HealthSystem, and St. Francis Hospital, part of Resurrection Health Care.
